What is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is a medical condition in the male breast glands that causes enlarged breast tissue in men and teenage boys. Colloquially, this condition may be referred to as "man boobs." In most cases, gynecomastia is not a health concern, but a cosmetic matter. However, don't write it off as simply a vanity issue. Many men with gynecomastia experience serious psychological effects, including lack of self-confidence and embarrassment in social settings.
Common Causes of Gynecomastia
Experts believe there are five primary gynecomastia causes:
- Hormonal factors
- Certain medications (e.g., anabolic steroids, antidepressants)
- Illicit drugs and alcohol (e.g., amphetamines, heroin, marijuana, methadone)
- Diseases and health problems (e.g., hyperthyroidism, kidney or liver disease)
- Over-the-counter products containing certain herbs (that cause "estrogenic activity")

Male Breast Reduction Surgery
Enlarged male breasts can be reduced with liposuction and/or surgical excision of excess glandular tissue. On average, surgery takes about two hours, and is performed using either general or local anesthesia. The precise surgical approach that our New York gynecomastia surgeons will employ depends on the individual case, the patient's anatomy and personal goals.

Recovering from Male Breast Reduction Surgery
Gynecomastia recovery commonly involves mild to moderate swelling and bruising, as well as a tight or tender feeling in the chest. These side effects are only temporary, and will subside over time. Most men are able to return to work and light exercise within several days of surgery.
Benefits of Gynecomastia Surgery
Removing excess male breast tissue and creating a firmer, more masculine-looking chest can have a significant impact on the way a man feels about his body and appearance. After recovering from surgery, our gynecomastia patients usually feel much more confident around other people. They are also more comfortable when wearing tight workout clothing and going shirtless.
