Gynecomastia is a condition in which men develop enlarged, female-like breasts. There are a number of possible gynecomastia causes, such as hormonal imbalance, heredity, and alcohol consumption. In some cases, no known cause can be identified.
For some patients, surgical breast reduction for men may be the only solution for the enlargement of the breasts. However, it’s important to first identify any underlying causes before undergoing surgery, particularly in cases where the gynecomastia is the result of medication or drugs.
Drugs Which May Cause Gynecomastia
It is believed that drugs may account for one quarter of all cases of gynecomastia. Though more common in adults, drug-induced gynecomastia can occur in children and adolescents as well.
There are a variety of drugs and medications which may lead to gynecomastia, including the following:
· Therapeutic testosterone
· Antiandrogen therapy for prostate cancer
· Antiretroviral drugs for HIV
· Calcium antagonists for hypertension
· Some antibiotics, including ketoconazole, metronidazole and isoniazid
· Some anti-anxiety drugs, tricyclic antidepressants and antipsychotic mediations
· Antiulcer drugs like cimetidine, ranitidine, omeprazole
· Some chemotherapy agents such as those with methotrexate and alkylating agents
· Anabolic steroids
· Illicit drugs like marijuana, heroin and amphetamines
Treating Substance-Induced Gynecomastia
For patients with gynecomastia caused by the use of medications or drugs, the gynecomastia cure sometimes involves discontinuation of that drug. If caught early, in most cases this is sufficient treatment and the patient’s gynecomastia will improve.
Though surgical breast reduction for men is sometimes not needed in these cases, it may be an option if the appearance of the enlarged breast remains long term.
