Man boobs (gynecomastia) are a problem that many American men face, but very few understand. Up to half of all men will experience symptoms of gynecomastia at some point in their lives, which can be a very confusing and upsetting experience.

Gynecomastia is not physically dangerous, but it can be damaging to confidence and self-esteem. If you or a loved one is suffering from the condition, here are some answers to the top five questions about gynecomastia.

1. What Causes Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is caused by hormone fluctuations in the body, resulting in high levels of estrogen. Imbalances can be attributed to a wide variety of triggers, including genetics, age, illegal drugs, steroids, prescription drugs, and more.

2. Do Pills and Creams Treat Gynecomastia?

Many manufactures have tried to capitalize on the plight of men with gynecomastia by offering herbal remedies, pills, and creams to treat the condition. Despite their promises and high price tags, these products simply don’t work, and are a waste of money. The only effective gynecomastia treatment is surgery. Read more about why pills don’t treat gynecomastia, here.

3. Can Gynecomastia Go Away on Its Own?

Because gynecomastia is hormonal in nature, it can occur at several phases of life, including infancy, adolescence, and old age. Cases of gynecomastia in babies almost always resolve themselves, and a good number of teens with gynecomastia have the problem disappear within two years.

Older men, unfortunately, are not usually so lucky. In addition, men whose gynecomastia is linked to genetics and/or drug use should not expect the problem to get better on its own.

4. Do Exercise and Diet Get Rid of Man Boobs?

Unfortunately, true gynecomastia cannot be resolved with exercise. Pseudogynecomastia, which is caused solely by fat in the chest area can be improved by diet and exercise, but gynecomastia involving excess breast tissue will be unaffected, or even become more pronounced with exercise (with buildup of the pectoral muscles).

5. What Is Gynecomastia Surgery?

Gynecomastia surgery is the only effective method for getting rid of man boobs. Using a combination of traditional excision techniques and liposuction, the surgeon removes excess breast tissue and fat through a small incision. This procedure is permanent, unless breast development is triggered again by the use of steroids or other causes.
