Plastic surgery used to be considered a woman’s world, but recently, more and more men have started to take advantage of the benefits of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery.

This increase in male plastic surgery continues as stigmas surrounding cosmetic surgery begin to fall away.

2013 Statistics

The 2013 statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) do not specifically cite a rise in most surgical and non-invasive procedures for men, but plastic surgeons are seeing more men in their offices for very specific procedures such as liposuction, rhinoplasty, and anti-aging treatments.

In addition, one type of surgery particular to men saw a large increase over the last year: male breast reduction for the treatment of gynecomastia.

Increase in Gynecomastia Surgery

One of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures for men is gynecomastia surgery, also known as male breast reduction. Gynecomastia (enlarged male breasts) is caused by a hormone imbalance that results in increased estrogen levels in the body.

This can occur at any age, and when not resolved naturally when normal hormonal levels return (such as can occur during infancy and puberty), excess breast tissue is permanent and must be removed with surgery.

Gynecomastia surgery is performed using a combination of liposuction and tissue excision techniques. According to ASPS statistics, gynecomastia treatment is up 11% from 2012 to 2013. This shows that more men are recognizing the psychological benefits of gynecomastia surgery and electing to undergo the procedure.

Worldwide Increases

American men aren’t the only ones seeking help from plastic surgeons. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) statistics showed gains in liposuction, gynecomastia treatment, eyelid surgery, and rhinoplasty, suggesting that men everywhere are beginning to feel more confident in seeking treatment for their aesthetic concerns.
