Gynecomastia, more commonly known as male breast enlargement, is a condition that can affect males of any age. Depending on the circumstances, this may be temporary, but once true gynecomastia is established, the excess breast tissue will not go away on its own.

While gynecomastia is not dangerous in and of itself, it can have severe emotional repercussions and may be associated with several diseases and conditions.

The Root Cause of Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is triggered by changes in hormone levels in the body. When estrogen levels get abnormally high, breast growth can occur. This often occurs at several different life stages, which is considered normal.

Babies often have temporary gynecomastia, as do young men in their teens, due to fluctuating hormone levels. Gynecomastia in teens usually resolves itself within a few years, but it can be embarrassing during that time. Older men are also at risk for developing the condition, and in this case, the gynecomastia is likely to be permanent.

Artificial hormone fluctuations can also be caused by the use of steroids, marijuana, and prescription drugs.

Associated Conditions

While age and substances are the most common reasons why gynecomastia develops, there are also several diseases and conditions that can cause male breast growth.

These include:

  • Tumors: Some tumors can trigger hormonal changes, which can result in gynecomastia.
  • Kidney failure: According to the Mayo clinic, as many as 50 percent of men on dialysis experience breast growth.
  • Pituitary issues
  • Kleinfelter Syndrome: Extra X chromosome in a man, interfering with testosterone production
  • Liver cirrhosis
  • Hyperthyroidism: Overproduction of thyroxine

If you are experiencing male breast growth, it is wise to get an exam by your primary doctor to check for related medical problems in addition to discussing surgical treatment with a plastic surgeon.

Treatment for Established Gynecomastia

Male breast reduction surgery is the only effective way to surgically treat gynecomastia permanently. The procedure involves liposuction of the chest area and removal of excess male breast gland tissue by a plastic surgeon.
