Understanding Gynecomastia and Its Causes
At our breast surgery for men clinics, we see many gynecomastia NY patients who are unhappy with the appearance of their chest and are seeking a firmer, flatter, more toned appearance.
Gynecomastia is a medical condition characterized by an enlarged, female-like chest in males and it occurs when there is a decrease in the amount of testosterone relative to the amount of estrogen.
This causes the breast tissue to swell and may even result in breast tenderness or pain. Gynecomastia can occur in both boys and men and may affect one or both breasts.
Why Breast Surgery for Men May Be Ideal in Some Cases
Before jumping in head first to get breast surgery for men, our experienced gynecomastia NY surgeons on the Advanced Cosmetic Surgery Team, will be happy to discuss the causes of gynecomastia in detail with you and develop a plan to address your individual concerns.
Generally speaking, this imbalance between estrogen and testosterone levels in the male body can occur for a number of reasons. Natural hormonal changes leading to gynecomastia can occur in male infants due to their mother’s estrogen, pubescent boys, and in older men between the ages of 50 and 80 as testosterone levels decline.
Other causes of gynecomastia may include the following:
- The use of certain medications including anti-androgens, anabolic steroids and androgens, some AIDS medications, anti-anxiety medications, tricyclic antidepressants, antibiotics, ulcer medications, chemotherapy, and heart medications.
- Alcohol use.
- Drug use, including the use of amphetamines, marijuana, heroin and methadone.
- Some health conditions such as hypogonadism, aging, tumors, hyperthyroidism, kidney failure, liver failure and cirrhosis, and malnutrition and starvation.
- The use of certain herbal products like tea tree or lavender in shampoos, soaps or lotions.
