Gynecomastia, enlarged male breasts, is exceedingly common in the United States. Up to half of all men will experience the problem at some point in their lives. The issue can be caused by many different factors, some of which are related to genetics, age, and disease.
Other cases, however, are caused by the use of prescription medicines or illegal drugs. The question many men have, however, is whether it is possible to reverse gynecomastia after the drug or medication is stopped.
How Drugs Cause Gynecomastia
The level of hormones in the body dictates whether or not excessive male breast growth will occur. When hormones are balanced in the male body, excessive breast growth does not happen, as there is not enough estrogen to produce gland or tissue development.
Steroids, anti-psychotics, marijuana, and some other drugs, however, can cause a hormonal imbalance, resulting in breast development. Excessive estrogen in the male body triggers gynecomastia, which can become a source of extreme anxiety for those that suffer from it. Read more about the link between propecia and gynecomastia.
Ceasing Drug Use–Will it Go Away?
Many men hope that by simply ceasing the use of a drug or medication that may be causing breast development, the problem will begin to go away. While some types of gynecomastia (adolescent and newborn) typically resolve themselves over time, established adult gynecomastia often times will not, even after hormone levels normalize.
This is because the breast gland tissue will already have grown, and cannot simply disappear by ceasing the drug that caused it. The body does not know that the tissue is not supposed to be there, so it does not dissolve on its own.
Unfortunately, there is currently only one way to effectively treat gynecomastia: with male breast reduction surgery.
How Gynecomastia Surgery is Done at Advanced Cosmetic Surgery of New York
Male breast reduction is a specialized surgery that involves two techniques: liposuction and excision. First, a gentle liposuction method we use is SmartlipoTM. This laser lipo uses a laser beam to remove excess fat in the chest that may be contributing to a feminine appearance.
Second, the underlying breast gland tissue is gently removed by hand with exquisite skill, and then the incisions closed. As long as there are no major spikes in estrogen levels later on, the results of gynecomastia surgery will be permanent.
