You’ve probably already started thinking about your New Year’s Resolutions, but if you’re a man suffering from gynecomastia (enlarged male breasts), you may want to add another item to your list for the new year: get rid of your man boobs.

You’ll gain back your confidence and never again have to worry about being seen at the beach. But what treatments are available? And do they work?

What Causes Gynecomastia?

Medical statistics show that gynecomastia affects about half of the male population at some point during their lifetime. It is triggered by hormonal imbalances that can be caused by a wide variety of factors including genetics, age, illegal drugs and steroids, or prescription drugs. Once gynecomastia is established, it will not go away on its own.

Treatment Methods that Don’t Work

Many people try to get rid of gynecomastia on their own, using the methods discussed below. Sadly, these methods are ineffective at treating gynecomastia, and can be frustrating for men who are embarrassed by their enlarged male breasts.

Unless the gynecomastia is caused by excess fat rather than a hormonal imbalance, exercise will not resolve the issue. Toning the chest may even, in fact, make gynecomastia appear more prominent, as the muscles will stand out more and make an already enlarged chest protrude even further.

Creams & Pills

Some companies try to cash in on the insecurities that gynecomastia causes by manufacturing creams that promise resolution but which are largely ineffective at treating man boobs. While these creams print lofty claims on the label, they end up being a disappointment and a complete waste of money.

The Only Effective Treatment

There is only one way to get rid of man boobs for good: surgery. Gynecomastia surgery involves removal of the male breast glandular tissue and liposuction to permanently create a more masculine physique. While more and more men are taking the steps to resolve their gynecomastia for good, there are still very few surgeons who specialize in the procedure.

Our New York plastic and cosmetic surgeons are among the few gynecomastia specialists in the state. They help hundreds of men each year feel more confident through male breast reduction surgery.
